Meditation is attention control practice, nothing more or less than that. What is typically called mindfulness is actually wilful embodiment. Mindfulness is deep thought.
Meditation does not allow access to the transcendent. The only ways to do that are to increase the resolution of our instruments or our logic.
The purpose of mediation is to bring what you want and what you want to want into alignment - enlightenment.
There is no such thing as practicing meditation - the practice is the mediation. When you do it consistently, that's called kung-fu ( which will inherently involve embodiment but not necessarily combat ).

Empty mind and ego death are a way to reset your framing of reality, not an escape from it. They are a wonderful place to visit and a terrible place to stay.

Ego is very important - for example in though battle when You're striving to be better or protecting that You hold dear.
Id sends You messages through dreams or deep meditation - ideas / emotions / thoughts
Interesting. For me meditation is transcending thought to enter a state of pure consciousness.
