unified Highlander canon
Origins: Immortals are exiles from Zeist. Their essence is placed into human infant bodies and left as foundlings on Earth. They are born human, grow as humans, but their true nature is Zeistian. The Watchers never discovered Zeist because it predates their records and is extradimensional.
Ramirez: His human body was born in Egypt in 896 BC. His Zeistian essence knew Connor before their exile. When his body died in 1536, his essence pattern was preserved. In 1994, Zeistian energy reconstituted his body once. A unique event, not a general rule.
The Prize: The accumulated Quickening — the life force and knowledge of all fallen immortals. It is not fixed. It manifests according to the phase of the Game:
- 1986: Knowledge of all men’s thoughts, mortality-like aging, ability to have children.
- Highlander II: Choice between return to Zeist or remaining on Earth as mortal.
Both are real. The Prize adapts to the winner and the era.
The Gathering: Cyclical. The prophecy plays out in waves. Connor’s 1986 victory was a real Gathering with a real Prize — but it was a phase, not the finale. The Game regenerated and continued. The TV series era is the next wave. Endgame is another.
Holy Ground: A real supernatural prohibition. Immortals cannot fight on holy ground. The “tradition” is how the knowledge is passed down; the power behind it is real. The Pompeii catastrophe is unverified rumor. The rule is absolute but its consequences are not necessarily apocalyptic.
The Source (2007): Duncan MacLeod’s fever dream. Not real. The Guardian, the fetus Prize, the changed rules — all dream imagery processing his fears and hopes.
The Shield: A technological response to environmental collapse in the 1999 timeline. It coexists with the supernatural Game.
Endgame (2000): Real. Duncan beheads Connor and absorbs his Quickening. The Game continues.
Quickening: The transfer of life force upon death. It heals, restores youth, and transfers knowledge. In rare cases (Ramirez), Zeistian energy can reconstitute a destroyed pattern.
